ATTRACTIONS TO VISIT WHEN YOU STAY WITH US
Coxley Vineyard Hotel is perfectly located for exploring the
many tourist attractions in the local area.
So much to see and do
and all within only 5 – 45 minutes drive!
Cycling and Cycle Routes –
just outside the front door!
Explore the local countryside and recommended cycle
routes using us as your base. Cycle
maps and information can be purchased from local newsagents or the
Tourist Information in Wells – or you may wish to make up your own!
We are able to provide a secure area for bikes to be stored,
provide laundry services if needed, and packed lunches upon request.
Rambling and Local Walks –
again just outside the front door!
There are pretty walks everywhere around us. The
Somerset levels, Mendip Hills, Quantock Hills and local towns and
villages provide an abundance of places to explore on foot, to suit all
levels of enthusiast’s. Maps
and Route information can be found in the local newsagents and Tourist
Information Centres, again, we can provide laundry facilities and packed
lunches if required.
City of Wells, Wells Cathedral, Bishops Palace and Vicars
Close – 5
mins drive
A lovely place to spend the day.
On Wednesday’s and Saturday’s there is an open air market
held in the Market place at the top of the High Street. The Market Place
also leads to two C15th stone gateways, one which leads to the
magnificent Wells Cathedral and Vicars Close (the oldest medieval,
intact residential street in Europe) and the other to the tranquillity of
the Bishops Palace and Moat, where you can wander among the ruins and
beautiful gardens, or sit alongside the moat, relax, and watch the world
go by.
Glastonbury Tor, Glastonbury
Abbey, Somerset Rural
Life Museum –
6 mins drive
Glastonbury Tor – quite a climb - but well worth
the effort for the outstanding panorama that you are rewarded with when
you reach the summit of this ancient monument. Views across the Somerset
levels to the Mendip Hills and Quantocks.
Glastonbury Town and Glastonbury Abbey – certainly
a town with a diverse array of shops where you can learn about the myths
and legends of the Tor and it’s surrounding area, and wander around
the Abbey ruins.
Glastonbury Extravaganza – 6 mins drive
Open air musical event held annually on the second
weekend in August in the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey, a great evening
out.
Royal Bath and West Showground
– 20
minutes drive
Host to a large diversity of events and shows all
year round, such as The Bath and West Show, Gardening, Dairy,
Horticultural, Flower, and Bridal Shows, Horse Trials, Extreme Sports
and Motorcycle events, Spring Festival, and Christmas Fair, plus many,
many more, all within easy driving distance of Coxley Vineyard Hotel
which provides a great base for visitors and Exhibitors.
Guy Fawkes Carnival
Circuit – 5 mins drive
Remember to pack your camera, woolly socks and warm
clothing – the Guy Fawkes illuminated carnival procession is
absolutely spectacular. The
floats often 20 meters long, are a dazzling array of music, lights and
dancing all built by the many local dedicated carnival club members.
The 2-3 hour procession moves to a different town each night in
the local area, such as Bridgewater Carnival,
Shepton Mallet carnival, Wells Carnival and Glastonbury Carnival.
Street and Clarks factory
Shopping Village – 8 mins drive
Home to Clarks shoe manufacturers and Clarks Factory
Shopping Village, where many retail bargains can be found for brand
names.
Wookey Hole Caves – 8 mins drive
Explore the caves beneath the Mendip Hills and learn
of the legend of the Witch of Wookey Hole, and the continued cave
diver’s exploration of the caverns and chambers that are beneath the
Mendip Hills. Learn how paper was made by hand in the Paper mill.
Cheddar Caves & Cheddar
Gorge – 20
mins drive
Originally carved through the rock by a river a
million years ago, this pretty village is also a lovely place to visit,
with plenty of tearooms, walks and quaint shops.
Gough’s Cave and Cox’s cave are well worth a visit, along
with walks up through the gorge to take in the breathtaking height of
the cliffs, and the scenery of the Mendip Hills.
Longleat House and Safari Park
– 40
mins drive
Home to Lord Bath, this historical house, grounds,
safari park, and much, much more provides an absolutely great day out -
If you don’t manage to see everything in one day and you buy a
Passport ticket – then you can go back again!
Bath – 40 mins drive
The beautiful and historical city of Bath where you
can wander all day. Lots to see, including the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey
and shops. This Roman town
is steeped in history, with its elegant town houses and many parks.
